    Hughsnet is expensive and frustrating.

I just got Hughsnet a month ago, which cost about $520 when all was said and done. Basically it does not work well enough to use. It is much too inconsistent. When it works, it is a bit faster than dial-up, but about half the time it does not work at all. Other times it is so slow that only one page in five will load properly. Definately keep your dial-up account and hope that DSL or cable reaches you soon.

I had been using Hughesnet for a year. Because of where I live, I had no option other than satellite or dial-up. I used satellite but was always frustrated with the service. The last straw was when they changed the FAP policy. My daughters had been downloading some songs the night before. The next morning, the satellite speed was much worse than dial-up. After calling support, I found out that 2 weeks earlier they changed the FAP policy. My access had been downgraded because of the songs my daughters had downloaded and it would stay that way for 24 hours. I was working from my home that day and this was not acceptable.

I found something much better. I still do not have access to DSL or cable, but Sprint mobile broadband now serves my area. I bought a D-link router that the Sprint card plugs into and the whole house accesses the internet through it. Linksys also makes a router that uses the mobile broadband card. It is not as fast as DSL or cable, but it is much better than the satellite connection I had.

If DSL or cable is not an option for you, check if you have mobile broadband access in your area. It is much better than satellite.

I was told that this was a good company from a local dealer..So I went on line and it had a deal you paid 299.00 and you got a 300 rebate..I joined in oct.of 2006 ..it was a 3 part rebate ..still waiting and it is almost may of 2007,,If it starts to snow the dish goes out I had a tablespoon of snow on it and it stopped working,,So the next time it snowed I purchased their so called weather cover and put it on ...Same deal got a little snow on it and it was out..I have satalite tv and have had it since the ealy 90's I have never had it go out..The other problem they don't tell you that they measure the amount of stuff that you down load you are only allowed to down load little programs..if you need to down load something you have to use dial up..You call for customer service and you get someone you can't understand because it sounds like they are just learning english and they are from another country..and rude as hell..My service is like a rolller coaster ,,,most of the time it is slower than dial up and maybe if your lucky you might get a little speed....I wish that I had found this site before I got stuck with this major pile of junk....Stay with the dial up......save your money they just want to take it from you and do nothing for it,,,,,

avoid unless you are desparate - get 12 month contract

I was with DirectWay through Earthlink for 4-1/2 years. Service level was good most of the time but DW4000 modems and horn design of dish caused problems. In order to get the new dish and DW7000 modem I had to end my Earthlink service and order new service from HughesNet. Paid $600 for dish installation and had speeds of 720 down and 122 up showing on HughesNet internal speed test. Important that the test speeds are roughly 4 times faster than what you can expect to see in real world use. FTP to a commercial site and speeds on average are 30K upload.

Starting in January my upload and download speeds crashed to where download speed has averaged under 260K on the HughesNet test site and often for days at a time the download speed is under 100K. Tier 4 support has stated that the problem is available bandwidth and that there is nothing they can do about it.

After repeated calls to HughesNet tech support and complaining to their Customer Care center and lodging an official dispute with HughesNet they proceeded to cut my service with no notice and lock my account. I was told to contact Executive Customer Care but no one at the HughesNet Customer Care center could either connect me to ECC or provide me with a phone number. They did offer to provide me with their mailing address.

I am currently paying for HughesNet service but using my newly created Earthlink dial-up account to post this message as I have no service from HughesNet - just a $600 dish sitting on a pole. In 30 years of experience with phone companies and ISP's I have never had to deal with such an arrogant and unhelpful company. They have a virtual monopoly and it shows with their complete disregard for their customers.

    Very happy with Direcway

Just upgraded from the DW4000 to HS7000s. The whole upgrade process went very smooth without any problems. Overall, web pages and downloads are very fast and consistent. Not having the software on the computer is nice. Networking was really easy too.

So far I'm very impressed. I can't believe I suffered over 3 years with the DW4000.

I would recommend to anyone on the older equipment to upgrade.

    use dial up

I had a business line with a 2 year contract. Not 1 time in 24 month did I ever get the speed (I paid for) Hughes stated I could receive. Tech support is not worth trying. You get a lot of hot air.
On my last payment to Hughes American express rejected the bill, Hughes did not try to resubmit they just turned it over to a collection agency. 23 times of paying on time 1 rejected payment and Hughes would not even talk to me. I had to pay thru the collection agent.

Save you hard earned money
Go dial up or write a letter but don't use this service

You never get what you pay for with them.
They have no customer service.
They have no tech support.
