AOL Broadband Good Reviewer: Anonymous 05-20-2007 Aol Broadband is very fast. It has great uptime, good support team, and many more free software.

AOL is Slow Reviewer: johng 04-26-2007 Its broadband but it still acts slow. I would have not paid for their service if I know that was going to happen.

Absolutely no resolution to problem. Reviewer: Anonymous Alabama 07-08-2006 Novice computer user tried to fix problem when attempting to use the AOL computer checkup. I was connected to about five different technicians and disconnected numerous times. They all asked the same questions - I wasted 1hr. and 22 mins. of my precious time with no result. I am still receiving mesg that AOL was having connectivity problem with downloading. I don't think I will ever resolve this problem.Registered Nurse

Unreliable connectivity. Customer service doesn't usually resolve the problem. Reviewer: Anonymous 05-31-2006 I have been with AOL for about 10 years now and have been satisfied, with dial-up. However, switching to the AOL/Bellsouth broadband package has been frustrating at best with unreliable connectivity such as having access today doesn't mean there will be access tomorrow. (Not good for college students, such as myself, that need to do research. My poor mother, trying to write her Doctorate thesis, is going insane.) Connectivity is sporadic at best. I am currently writing this review by piggybacking on neighbors' wireless signals.
Calling AOL for help is not an option because they tell you to call BellSouth. Calling BellSouth is not helpful. I've called many times following their instructions unplugging and plugging in the phone line filters, resetting the modem, taking the power away, and many other tasks. I have the whole customer service process memorized now.
Now I wait for a Bellsouth technician on my Saturday between the hours of 1pm and 4pm to check things out. And somehow, I have a strong feeling that the BellSouth technician will not be arriving since is is 4:36pm right now.

Awful customer service call centre Reviewer: thyrus 05-31-2006 AOL is absolutely awful!! I really just can't find the words to describe how rubbish their service it took me 8 months of trying to cancel to actually be able to do it and that was only by changing bank account so they could not take the money!!! DO NOT USE THEM!

Connectivity problems are AOL's biggest thing. Reviewer: lstratton 05-31-2006 AOL is about 11 years old now and is very popular. They are very good value for money and they give you a free broadband modem. The thing with AOL is that because they use their own browser (AOL 9.0), they have to use the most complicated of internet technologies such as IMAP email and their own special broadband modem support. This means that as it is so complicated, customers may find it very tricky to connect and experience technical hitches. If you sign up to AOL Dial-Up, then you will me ok, but if you sign up to Broadband packages, then you are almost garenteed to get connectivity problems such as the modem not connecting. (A common error). But don't let this put you off.
AOL's broadband packages cost from £17.99 per month to £35.00. (Sorry I am using pounds sterling). Some of the content that AOL provides such as radio, can only be used on Gold and Platinum packages.
AOL has a live help feature which is like instant messaging, but instead, you talk to a technician. This service is quite good but the technicians can be a bit off the point and try to answer questions in the way you don't want them to (If you see what I mean!). The telephone service is really rubbish. Most of the operators are foriegn and are the same as live chat mostly. As AOL's call centre is in somewhere stupid like china, then the telephone calls are rather slow and sometimes they take ages to answer.
That is my review on AOL and my verdict is: Buy broadband but proceed with caution on the broadband side of things.

Ineffective technical support Reviewer: smidsy 05-31-2006 Have been with AOL (Broadband Silver) for 10 months - terminated the contract 2 months early after frustration with AOL network changes.
To deal with the good points.
Connection speed was generally 90% of rated speed.
When I wanted to migrate away from AOL, they (India-based support) did give me a MAC on the same day as requested, and free of charge.
To deal with the bad points.
The free modem supplied by AOL did not provide the reliable, always-on connection. I spent £30 on a different modem to get a reliable connection (Replacement modem from AOL did not arrive). AOL technical support focused on my PC as the cause of my unreliable connection. My PC, however, works fine with a modem not provided by AOL.
The other technical issue was AOL changing the network. I ended up with 128 Kbps. I decided to pay AOL the remaining 2 months of my contract and migrate to a different ISP.
AOL software - To use less resource, I upgraded from AOL 9.0 by going back to AOL 8.0. Their spyware blocker missed spyware picked up by Lavasoft Ad-Aware that I used subsequently.

I have been a AOL customer since August 2005. Reviewer: Google Geek 05-06-2006 I have been a AOL customer since August 2005. I am on the Platinum package which is £29.99 a month. The 2MB service I receive from AOL is just not worth it! The installation software & other programs that are on the installation CD are pap. The AOL browser is cheap looking & is just not needed. I now use the Mozilla Firefox browser. It is a lot better. AOL Spyware Protection dosn't always pick up all spyware & adware. I had to install Microsoft Anti Spyware to double check what AOL Spyware Protection is supposed to do in the first place. But the biggest problem is AOL customer service. @ 7.5 pence per minute, when it used to be a 0800 number, to speak to someone in Bombay, who 9/10 times can't speak very good English & who has very little, if no computer knowledge. If you wonder why AOL customer service assistants put you on hold so much. It is because he/she is reading off their computer monitor how to sort out the problem. In my own opinion, that isn't computer knowledge, it is a joke! The question arises " Why am I paying (in my case) £29.99 per month & 7.5 pence per minute for most of the time their mistakes? My 12 month contract is up in August & I will be changing ISP. To who you might ask? Well I have three words for you Demon or Pipex. They offer the same & better quality packages than AOL does & also somewhat cheaper.

I have been with AOL for almost half a decade and have had no problems with their service Reviewer: bkkcho 05-06-2006 I have been with AOL for almost half a decade and have had no problems with their service, speed of delivery and connection issues. However, I have been recently migrated from the BT exchange to the AOL network and have encountered numerous connectivity problems. I have been without broadband for 2 weeks now.
The call centres are outsourced and the technicians incredibly unhelpful. If you're looking to have problems promptly resolved, try another service provider. I have called AOL helpline (which you have to pay for) and explained my problem, the technicians went through the physical set up with me EIGHT times in one session after passing me from tech to tech. My desperate pleas to have THEM do a line test and check the status of my line was ignored with the techs simply asking me the same questions over and over again.

Bad unreliable connection. Reviewer: princessnat04 05-06-2006 After being with AOL for 2 years I have finaly swapped. When the service is up and running it is brill. BUT....and I mean BUT, it very prone to not connecting. If you can't get connected then when you phone you go through to Asia, the staff have no clue what to do, tell you the same things every time and don't understand English very well. Level 2 help seems to be a tad better but not much.
This time AOL cancelled our broadband for no reason, yet it took 3 hours of phone calls for them to actually notice this, they then said they needed 2 weeks to reconneect. 2 weeks later and nothing, rang back, they said the rdr was never processed and they need another 2 weeks, told them to naff off and have switched.

Takes a long time to get through to their helpline Reviewer: dynamicbaddog 05-06-2006 For someone using the internet for the first time AOL is a good place to start. It's easy to install. The colourful browser is easy to navigate; e-mail is reliable, as is the instant messenger. The new spyware protection is very good. I've been with them since 2003, and they have improved a great deal since then. It does seem that they do listen to and take on board what their customers say.
On the minus side there have been rare occasions when things have gone wrong, and the call centre is not as good as what it used to be. Even though the staff are always friendly and polite, the line is often crackly; it can takes ages to get through to someone, and they now charge for the call (in the past it was a freephone number)
Overall, satisfactory. There's a lot worse out there!
